Art Another Way
Suggested Chapter Pairing(s): 6, 10
Materials: Paper, paints, or markers
Background: In the story, Aven uses her feet to paint.
Instructions:
Try creating art without using your hands. Use your elbow to paint a rainbow or your feet to draw a landscape. Experiment with different tools and techniques. It’s not about perfection—it’s about exploring what’s possible!
Reflection Question:
How did it feel to create art in a way you’re not used to? What does this experience teach you about how Aven approaches challenges in her life?
Uniquely You
Suggested Chapter Pairing(s): Any chapter
Materials: Construction paper, scissors, glue, pencils, or pens
Background: Aven's physical appearance is just one part of who she is, and she reminds us that everyone has many layers to their identity.
Instructions:
Think about what makes you unique. What are your personality traits, skills, or talents? Cut out 7 rectangles of different sizes from colorful paper. Glue the smallest rectangle to the center of a sheet of paper, leaving one side free to open like a flap. Under the flap, write something special about yourself. Repeat this with each rectangle, layering them so they create a series of flaps. Write your name on the top flap.
Reflection Question:
Aven shows that there’s more to people than what we see on the surface. How can recognizing your own layers help you better understand others?
Theme Park Designer
Suggested Chapter Pairing(s): 5
Materials: Paper, markers, or colored pencils
Background: Aven's parents run Stagecoach Pass, a rundown Western theme park with potential for adventure.
Instructions:
Imagine you’re designing your own theme park. What’s the theme? Are there rides, animals, or special activities? Use a large sheet of paper to draw a detailed map of your park. Include fun details like what the restaurants would serve or the kind of music visitors would hear.
Reflection Question:
Aven sees Stagecoach Pass as both a challenge and an opportunity. How might your theme park help people overcome challenges or find joy?
Blog It
Suggested Chapter Pairing(s): 6, 10
Materials: Paper, pencils, markers, scissors, glue sticks, magazines
Background: Aven uses her blog to share advice and her thoughts with others.
Instructions:
If you had your own blog, what would it be about? Write your first post, sharing something important or interesting to you. Give your blog a title and add some images to make it stand out. If you’re feeling creative, try designing a logo for your blog.
Reflection Question:
Aven uses her blog to help others and express herself. What topics are important to you, and how might sharing your voice make a difference to someone else?
Pep Talk Postcards
Suggested Chapter Pairing(s): Any
Materials: Blank index cards, markers, or colored pencils
Background: Aven’s parents teach her to stay determined, even when things are tough.
Instructions:
Create a set of mini postcards with positive messages like “You’ve got this!” or “Keep going—you’re amazing!” Decorate each card with colorful drawings or patterns. Once your postcards are finished, give them to family or friends who could use some encouragement—or save them to remind yourself of your own strength.
Reflection Question:
Aven often pushes through challenges with her parents' support. How does encouraging others—or being encouraged—change the way you face difficult situations?
